more clouds and increasing possibility of scattered showers. there is a live look at radar. not much in the way of shower activity. we have a cold front approaching from the west. we will have the possibility of showers around here. best chance late morning into the afternoon hours. and the possibility that there could be a thunderstorm out there, particularly south and east of the city this afternoon. there are your mild temperatures. 67 in washington at reagan national. 66 at dulles and bwi marshall. forecast highs for today back in the low 7 every 70s -- 70s. it should be on the mild side. we will take a look at the seven day in a couple of minutes. let's get the latest in traffic from julie wright. good morning, tucker. on the orange and blue line delays to the new carrollton stop and largo town center due to a disabled train. traffic is moving but slowing. traveling around the capital

beltway, lanes open on i-95. burk lake road and lake chapel cleaning up this wreck. accident activity nursery at 295. crash southbound 95 of 695, accident is on the shoulder causing a backup. meanwhile closer to home, southbound 270, no incidents at hyattstown. checking for a stalled car at 28 in the local lanes. if you are east on 66th heavy volume from fair oaks to 123 and approaching the capital beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. we begin with two developing stories. the first in prince william county where the personal belongings of dozens of people are destroyed. about 80 storage unites burned overnight in manassas.

the fire burned for at least three hours. investigators don't know the cause of the blaze. no one was hurt. meanwhile, the search continues for two local hikers missing in montana. jason heiser and neal peckens disappeared friday during a visit to glacier national park of the they were record missing after failing to catch a flight home. at least 50 people joined the search team but heavy snow and thick clouds made aerial and ground searches difficult. the trial begins for two police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student in 2010. it was all caught on tape from a dorm window. >> the student was celebrating with other rowdy students outside after the school beat duke in a basketball game. karen gray houston is live with the latest. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, tony. good morning, allison. the two prince george's county police officers are james harrison and reginald baker.

they are accused of using excessive force in assaulting student jack mckenna during a victory celebration after a basketball game. that beating was captured on videotape. a student recorded the assault from a dorm room window. it shows officers in riot gear striking mckenna with metal batons. he was walking on a sidewalk, hit repeatedly when he approached officers on horseback. this all happened after a spontaneous celebration that followed the terps victory over rival duke in march 2010. students swarmed in the street on route 1. police say they were unruly and out of control burning trash cans, tearing down signs, throwing projectiles at officers. more than 30 people were arrested for disorderly conduct, most of them students including mckenna. his lawyers say he suffered a

concussion and contusion. now initially mckenna was charged with assault on a police officer. all of the charges against him were dropped when the videotape surfaced. tony and allison, back into you. >> all right. thank you very much. also in court today, five men charged in connection with the 911 terror attacks including khalid sheikh mohammed. the pretrial sessions will be held at guantanamo bay and closed to the public. families of 9-11 victims and first responders can watch from military facilities in maryland, new york, new jersey and massachusetts. the five suspects will be on hand for the hearings. the actual tribunal will begin sometime next year. round two of the presidential debates coming up fast. president obama and mitt romney. >> reporter: this shows you what is at stake in the second debate. this is real clear politics

office. >> reporter: the format of this debate at hofstra university in debate will be town hall style with questions from uncome -- from uncommitted voters. the romney campaign is bracing for a more aggressive president. >> i think the wind is at governor romney's back. there is clearly momentum. you can see it on the trail. the country is enly divided. >> reporter: the overall tone may be different than the first presidential debate where they stood at podiums squaring off at each other. the debate will be a town hall format which means both of these guys have to connect directly with the voters there in front of them asking questions. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. >> one other election note. today is the deadline for people living in virginia to register by mail to vote in time for the november ballot. election officials say to make sure you check your status online and double check your

polling place. in fairfax county alone, as many as 200,000 people may be excluded from voting because of polling place errors or registration difficulties. democrats are shrugging off continued accusations by republicans that the white house deliberately covered up details of the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. republican senator lindsay graham says he thinks the administration is trying to keep voters from questioning the president's handling of the war on terror and he says the white house knew the attack was a coordinated assault but he wants people to think the president dismantled al-qaeda. the pakistani school girl shot in the head by the taliban is on her way to a british hospital. she was targeted because she called for girls to be educated. she was seriously wounded when an assassination team shot her on her way to school last tuesday. she is still unconscious this morning but doctors are optimistic about her recovery.

the tributes for pennsylvania's long time senator arlen specterave been pouring in since he passed away yesterday. he was a survivor of decades of political fights on capitol hill. but he lost his battle against hodgkin's lymphoma. president obama is remembering him as a fiercely independent fighter from his days stomping out as a prosecutor in pennsylvania. he said laura and i appreciate his con try biogs to america and are grateful for his many years of public service. he was 82 years old. protection from cervical cancer or encouraging promise skew it at the among young girls the side effects of the hpv vaccine. >> plus, proving the critics wrong. robert griffin the third puts

welcome back. a nationwide meningitis outbreak is still spreading. 205 people have become infected and 15 died. 14 states are reporting cases. the latest is in new hampshire. the outbreak has been linked toe steroid shots used for back pain made by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. a new study may bring peace of mind to millions of worried

we had clouds move in and mild temperatures around here yesterday but we have changes to talk about. we have a cold front with showers and lots of clouds today. radar, not much in the way of shower activity at the moment. we have a few showers pushing east of annapolis. a few showers earlier up to the north. right now we are generally quiet. i'm not sure we will remain so during the day. our cold front just off to the west, that will continue to press into the area later this morning and early this afternoon. i think some of that rain in southwest virginia will get picked up and pull to the washington area. bring an umbrella. we will have scattered showers in the forecast. later this afternoon, south and east of the city, it's possible you could get a thunderstorm, maybe a rumble of thunder. if you hear thunder, don't be surprised. the front gets east of us later tonight and we are back in the sunshine. slightly cooler air tomorrow. it's still hurricane season. this is tropical storm rafael. heavy rain over the weekend in

welcome back. when president obama and mitt romney meet for the second debate tomorrow night, the topic of the libyan consulate attack will be brought up, especially considering vice president's joe biden denial that they didn't know the a request for more security. j.j. green joins us with a closer look at all of this. >> good morning. >> if part of the mission has been to confuse we the people about what happened in libya, who knew what when. >> mission accomplished. >> i have to say and i read about it every day, i'm confused. i know they asked for extra security. i am confused as to how far the

request got, who might have denied it, what did the white house know when and all of that. what do we know, what do you know. >> first and foremost, let's look at the reality of what happened. diplomatic security did a human job of trying to protect americans in libya from the day the uprisings began that lead to the killing and the eventual ouster of gadhafi. they knew it would be a stiff challenge for them to face and they rose to it. in the process of doing that, they said, hey, we need money to do this and we need extra security to do this. that is something that they felt and many others felt needed to be dealt with. there were requests that went all the way up the chain, i am told, but were denied. now, how far is all the way? whether the president, vice president knew about it, i

don't know. did the national security council know about it? did they have anything to do with it? who talks about it and makes the decision? this is something that we have yet to find out b. i know the united nations ambassador susan rice did not believe this was a terrorist attack early on. i did hear the secretary of state say we had to figure out what was going on first before we could make any decisions on what to do about it. i do know that folks in the intelligence and law enforcement community were talking months before. several reports came up. the last in august saying this is a problem. we know al-qaeda is out here. we know what they are trying to do. they are gathering weapons and people and they knew that they could not find annis who was the man in libya dating back to the days before 9-11. so they knew something was brewing. what they did about it will be interesting in the end.

>> did al-qaeda very smartly -- for them, use what was going on with the unrest and everything and the reaction to that film and all that kind of thing, did they use that as an opportunity to mask their mission and go in. >> absolutely. that's what al-qaeda does. they look for opportunities and certainly now considering the weakness of the organization having lost many of its top operators over the last five to six years, they look for opportunities in places where they can skillfully blend in. one of the things, a report from the congressional research service, and it used -- it was done in part in conjunction with the irregular warfare unit at the pentagon, al-qaeda knew that this power vacuum after gay dave identified would present all sorts of opportunities, weapons, situations where they could do what they wanted to do and do it in a way in which time --

patience is their thing. do it in a way in which they could take their time and pick their spots and they did. >> hindsight is 20/20. are you surprised given the crime mate in libya in particular that a request for extra security would be denied on any grounds, financial, whatever it is? >> i have to say covering national security in washington, very little surprises me any more. the thing about it is before blaming people, before assigning responsibility for things that have taken place, there is really a lot of digging you have to do. some of that digging takes a long time to do. and at the end of the day, talking to the security folks and the law enforcement folks and intelligence folks, i know there is anger out there. there are the political folks on the other side which i don't deal with as you know, that have what they have to say. but they always fight, they

the redskins won and are 3-3 for the season. dave ross joins us at 8:30 to break it down and look at big losses around the nfc east. well, we are three weeks away from election day and one day from the second debate between president obama and governor mitt romney. they kept a low profile over the weekend. president obama was in williamsburg, virginia and isn't holding campaign events today. the president did take a break yesterday to deliver pizza to his virginia campaign staff. the president spent a few minutes shaking hands, taking calls trying to fire up the base. his republican challenger spent his sunday at church and doing debate prep of his own. governor romney campaigns in wisconsin then off to cincinnati for a rally at noon. one other election note, today is the deadline for people living in virginia to register to vote in time for the november ballot. election officials say to check

your status online, double check your polling place. in fairfax county alone, officials say as many as 200,000 people may be excluded from voting because of polling place errors or registration difficulties. the search continues today for two local hikers missing in montana. jason heiser of maryland and neal peckens disappeared. they were reporting missing after failing to catch a flight home. 50 people have joined the search team but heavy snow and thick clouds made aerial and ground searches difficult. the trial begins today for two police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student during a rowdy celebration in 2010. the beating was caught on tape shot from a dorm window. fox 5's karen gray houston is live at police headquarters

with more. >> reporter: good morning, tony. the two officers who are going on trial today have had long and exemplary careers if you ask the fraternal order of police, they issued a statement saying that you should not rush to judgment in this case. prosecutors are accusing those two officers of using excessive force and are going to use a videotape to help them press their case. they say this video shows prince george's county police officers, reginald baker and james harrison, assaulting student jack mckenna. the video was recorded by a student and shows three officers in riot gear, two using batons in the assault. baker and harrison are charged with first and second-degree assault as well as misconduct in office. the videotaped incident occurred march 3, 2010, the night the university of maryland basketball team scored

a big win over rival duke. a victory celebration turned chaotic. police arrested 33 people and charged them with disorderly conduct after trash cans were burned. police say the crowd refused to obey orders to disburse. mckenna was among those arrested. his lawyers say his injuries included contusions and a concussion. according to police, four of those arrested had minor injuries. they say one officer was hurt when somebody punched him in the face. now, mckenna no longer faces charges in connection with this. prosecutors dropped those charges against him after the videotape surfaced. live at prince george's county police headquarters, karen gray houston, fox 5 news. tony, back to you. >> karen, thank you very much. also in court, five men charged in connection with the 9-11 terror attacks including

had day. good -- bethesda. welcome back to the show. do you find anybody that says i have the 401. there is going to be medicare, social security check, i'm ready or are we wayser than that now? >> there are some people. what the resources are depends. some feel they are ready before they are financially ready. it's difficult for everyone. the considerations for whether or not you are able to retire are more than financial. a lot of times they are emotional as well. >> we will get into that. you have thigh pretty clear signs that you are ready to retire. could you go over those for us. >> the first and second is related to expenses. so, have a good idea if you are nearing retirement, generally good at knowing what we have in terms of the 401(k) or what social security may be coming to us. we are good in terms of balance type things. but a lot of people nearing retiring and they are kind of

asked the question, what do your expenses look like, they don't know the answer to the question. so, look at your expenses, both discretionary and nondiscretionary. nonis the mortgage payment, food, health care costs and try to separate those two out and get a good feel of what the monthly need is in terms of expenses and make sure that the resources match up with that. then the third thing, further down the road that is more unpleasant to think about but deeply as important is preparing for a long-term care situation. and those are -- again, those are toward the end of retirement but very, very expensive. >> okay. you say like we talked about i want to visit the south of france. these are things we wanted to do after we raised our kids but you need to somehow figure in if your hobby is traveling how you do things like that. how do we come up with a number for that. >> so, you kind of have to work

out into your budget what you -- do homework, research, what those types of trips will cost you. one of the ways to plan or earmark for those big extravagant expenses, on the nondiscretionary, people try to pay the morning off before they retire or pay it down a bit so they have the extra flow of income to do the things they want to do, whether that's travel to france or golf at pebble beach. >> you started off talking about the emotional component. how do you factor that in. >> it's more than lining up income and expenses. we spend 40 to 60 hours a week, whatever it is at work. you better have a good idea of what it is you want to do. a lot of people that quit cold turkey find themselves bored three to six months later. association we are seeing a lot more people phase out over time for retirement and go from five days a week to two or three

joining us now is leslie rottenburg senior vice president of media aimed at helping kids develop socially and emotionally. i have a small child. we see these different issues from 0 time to time. >> they need a health guide. are you surprised by that figure. they do know what to do for the most part. they are their child's best teacher. they need strategies for coping with every day. in a young child's life, anything knew can make -- new can make them apprehensive and anxious. parents need strategies and skills they can practice with their kids at home. particularly before they start a formal instructional setting like a classroom which can be

overwhelming. >> so, you bring up a point. one of the things i was going to ask you, how early do you want to start this. when they are 2 or 3 we think everything is hunk can i dory. >> you want stow start when they are 2 or before that. 2 they can communicate. they have words, hopefully vow cab cue barry and -- vocabulary and you want to work with them to name their feelings, understand their feelings and they can manage their feelings. kindergarten teachers say 20% of incoming kids can't manage their feelings and they have a hard time learning in a classroom setting. >>the screen some of the various tips that you recommend for helping your kids to cope. one of the ones is point out positives, teach them to channel anger. tell me about those things. >> these tips come from a brand- new media property that we

as it says here to channel anger, to let kids -- their feelings are valid. anger, frustration, what have you. i guess as parents we shouldn't say don't feel that way. >> the most important first step is to say this everybody has these feelings. what you are feeling is anger. in daniel tiger's neighborhood, when you feel so mad you want to roar, take a deep breath and count to four. it normalizes the fact that you are feeling that way. instead of having a temper tantrum, learn a strategy and practice a strategy that will make it easier the next time the child has the same feeling. >> when you refer to a media property, we are talking about a show. >> show on your local pbs station. many times during the day you can find it. it's also available online. it's free streaming. if you have access to a tablet or iphone, also great games, free games that kids can play
